This module discusses role play and basic online safety and a little about roleplay manners
For ALL of us are still on earth. We still are prisoners of our earth mentality to one degree or another, our neuroses, our philosophies and sexuality that are ingrained and differ from the Gorean ideal. The true Gor is a place of honor, integrity, strength, discipline, beauty, and obedience, a place where the people have lived those ideals for their entire lives. SL Gor is NOT the same place, though many try to recreate those ideals as best they can.
When you enter Gor in Second Life, you are creating a character. Gor is a roleplay environment where you are taking on the role of someone who lives on this strange, beautiful, honorable, exciting, cruel, and often times unfair world. This character you create may resemble you very closely, or not at all, but it is a CHARACTER, and not the real you.
Roleplaying is a form of creative writing carried out, with an action or attitude is proposed that a group of individuals join the role play and to write and submit alternate segments of the letter where a couple of things happen every time. The final product seems a bit like a novel or short Story, but it is conceptually different from these two.
No one can teach you how to RP. It is something that can only learn for yourself. It is something that you practice on, and over time you learn from your mistakes and develop, improve and grow. Stamina is very important when wanting to, a good role-players will be, many people have years to get the skills they develop have taken the moment. They must be involved and you must try and be prepared to make mistakes and grow if you want.
In RPG, there is a clear difference between action and language. The former is associated with verbs, or "something" while the latter is "to say something." If you talk / conversation in an RP, it is important to distinguish between action and language through the use of quotation marks.
before the spoken words comes the quotation marks ""
* she comes into the room "greetings Master" she says gently*
- Be descriptive. This is very important, and how to make progress with RPGs, you will develop a sense of the descriptive. It is the difference between waiting for looters to turn up and stands on a hill, sending a bird, looking at the sun, sighed and looked around and touch the tip of your spear into the ground as you wait. Here you will find a level of description fits you, and it will come naturally.
- Have structure. It is the basic things like right numbers, proof reading, if you have problems with syntax, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation, but it is also with the sense of how much you do in your posts. It's a feeling you develop as you improve, but cramming 10 things in one article ends forcing people to read a thesis every time, and doing a few things too short and you find yourself at a disadvantage because people do more than by mail.
- Speak English. Perhaps one of the most important points that can be done is, No. 1 is for post to read if u type lyk DIS, I SKM OVR ur post and mute wld u frm all ma rps. Point made.
- Text speak-OMFG is text speak..and you don't use it in roleplay
Emotes need to be in third person
in order to emote you also use /me before your text to show action or /she
OOC is marked with ( )
Think of emotes as actions - so the first part of the statement is what I am doing and should be in third person.. So for rp we separate emotes from the spoken word by either putting "." around the spoken word - or using /me in front of the emotes.. Some people even use * ,* or :: around the emoted actions.
try to keep ooc to minimum - and surround it with (( )) so people can tell the difference, or go to IM
Do not use thoughts as emotes , no one can respond
turning the thought into an action is a good way - giving a cue on your face to let you know what could be going thru her head... Those are good ways to use it
she * is located in the warm grass, enjoying the warm sun stretched out, enjoying her beautiful legs "who this man is well over there? "
I should be giving you cues so you know whats going on and can respond to it (I would advise you to let you know what's going on and can react to it)
No one can read minds - so if someone thinks something out loud do not react to it.
Roleplay thoughts are ONLY brought into roleplay if they were meant to be disrespectful. You give up the protection of your thoughts if you use them for anything else than proper roleplay. If you are caught making "thought" comments in your actions, you will be punished as if they were spoken aloud. The reasons for this are... if you are that disrespectful or just that downright stupid, then you simply wish to ruin the fun of others' roleplay, and even though Gor is harsh and serious at times, it is just that, and everyone deserves to enjoy it. Learn to emote body language to epress your thoughts since that is all someonewould ave togo by in Gor
anyhow. If you decide to use the previous disrespectfully, the penalty for such is death, quick and over with. Others may see it differently, but if I see this and the Free does not kill you, when you return to me expect strict punishment immediately, I refuse to be made to look like an idiot as your Owner/Trainer.
Do not God-mod.
God-Modding - means you have unrealistic strengths in a role-playing. LIke being invincible (can not die or be injured or can go thru walls or jump 20 meters high), or the manipulation of time, etc.
Another form of god modding is deciding another's actions and not letting them play out it for themselves..
When you god mod, you take the fun out of roleplay for the other person, and most will never want to roleplay with you again
don't tell me what I am doing..how I am reacting..you do not know my character..you are not me
sometimes I do not know myself what I do
grins
it can also be cheating
for example
* Reading a tag to get info you haven't learned IC - how do you know if it is true?
* Deception - in combat, using tools like radar or mini-maps
* Using IMs to call for help - like more help needed in a raid
* Get information from the profiles, the fight or flight using the radar
* Teleporting out in the middle of a roleplay area in front of others in rp
Can you drop out of the sky?
If you are going into town just to talk to someone or to rp with them then it is fine but if we were playing girl catch and used the map to find the girls then that is cheating
If you used the Map to avoid people or your used Map to just check on people then yes that is cheating
- Be consistent. One of the things that is absolutely the logic behind the RP, you have to be consistent. Although it sounds obvious, it means that what happens if in the previous post / s done on your current post - if you are stabbed by someone in the last post, you will not be able to miraculously in the next Post heal and go about normally - you will bleed and your stamina will decrease, and eventually it would lead to unconsciousness and death if the wound is not treated.
Rp limits are only applicable to you... if you don't like the roleplay around you, you are not forced to join... but they need not stop for you...
In SL Gor, unfortunately there are determined people whose only goal is to prevent as much fun as possible. These "grief players" are a tiny minority on the overall impression, but they have a far disproportionate impact on the rest of Gor population. Fortunately, they tend to either get bored with obnoxiousness and either quit or play in the form.
Take Bob, for example:
Bob is boring. Bob overcomes the world. Bob kills all upset. Bob laughs. Bob takes Jupiter. Bob also takes over the world. Bob enslaved everyone.
The first movement is in order. After that, Bob turns in a person with no imagination.
Unless you are so unfortunate as to be one of these socially-malformed outsider, you will find it strong in your own interest to maintain a certain standard of politeness, while in the RP.
First off, it pays to be polite to others in the rule. It is basic human nature - if you treat others well, they'll treat you well and help you get ahead. Of course there are valid reasons for role-playing some degree of in-game "rudeness" - when you meet members of a rival city or camp, for example, or if you are playing a rather unpleasant character.
The most important thing about role playing rudeness is to keep the context of the role.
By and large, the main thing is to ask you if you're more or less RP are fun for others. In competition with other likely make the RP experience more fun, even if at the head. However, systematically tried everything, what will they do try to spoil their fun frustrate, and is not acceptable behavior.
In principle RP anything you say or do! It may be what you are thinking what you say out loud, anyone else or any actions that you do. It can be short (one line) or long (a whole paragraph). It should be written in 3rd Person past tense in the form of a story.
Example:
Mary walks to the table and sits down gracefully. "Who now to join in this mission?" she asks with a determined look in her blue eyes.
One answer might seem something like ...
Bob stands up, ready to pledge his loyalty, and says in a shaky but proud voice, "I will join you."
While you do not have to be descriptive commit in any single action, by describing how, where, when, etc. in your posts to help your employees with the know-exactly-what in the RP experience with little to no confusion. This will also reduce many of which help to ooc arguments that break on misinterpretation of the actions of a person basis. An action such as:
Bob strikes you.
This contains pretty much uncertainty - indeed, it would be donating a-great-great deal of confusion. "What is Bob Striking" "How?" "Which way?" "How hard was the blow?" "Is it a gun?"
A stronger post would go along the lines of:
Bob moves on his left side at a hard run, peel dagger, as he approaches his left arm up screens, then extends the dagger quickly in his soft flesh, ripping through his upper body, chest and all, all break- the vital organs he needs for survival. The attack takes him a few yards behind him, he quickly pivoted on the balls of the feet, ducked him back to face, and attentive.
Also, this explains the issues listed above:
- What is Bob Striking?
- He was torn at by the torso of his target with the goal
- How?
- A running attack. When he closed his opponent, raked his dagger arm held up.
- How hard was the blow?
- Heavy enough to rip through the flesh and bone
- Was it a gun?
- Unsheathed his dagger and held in his hand was his weapon
Of course the above example could be put another way, in a much shorter route and condensed as follows:
Bob runs at him, dagger in hand-held swaths up and tears at his body as he closes in, before he left to stand him.
It is shorter, and takes much less time to read. The longer post takes a good bit of time to read and write, but it offers a clear picture of what Bob is trying to do his opponents.
Moving on to online safety.
How to safely get out of a situation that you were uncomfortable with (rl limits), without dropping character altogether? or if someone was trying to roleplay through your own limitations?
somebody has an idea?
When I am in a situation I do not like - I try to use my limits in the role play.
Example:
A Master wants to use me so I beg... "Master I am white silk, please Master... You will have to pay my Master for the damage.."
If that doesn't work I beg "Please Master let me get permission from my Master he is in his home it will only take a moment"
If that still doesn't work... I try to flee to the kennels... "Master I beg to kennel as I do not wish to break my Masters rules"
Try to RP your way out of it first - it can be a very fun role play.. But if that doesn't work then move to IMs and explain your limits.
If that still doesn't work - call someone you trust or tp out. You are here have fun not to say no over and over.
Make a nc of the incident - the Head slaver and the Sim Mods and Admin will protect you from predators..
You have the right to "fade to black" in a sex scene. Just because someone wants to use your character doesn't mean you have to cyber. if you don't like rape...you fade to black
I tell the other person in IMs - and then emote fainting....
Be sure and read the the sim rules before entering.. Make sure you can accept the rules and consequences..
It is dangerous to give out e-mail addresses, phone numbers and even pictures. Be very careful who you share this information with. If someone found your IP Address they could (if they knew how) find YOU in your real life.
HOWEVER, what is not acceptable, no matter if you are slave or free, if another PLAYER is making demands upon YOU (not your character) that go outside the game. YOU, the player, HAVE THE ABSOLUTE RIGHT TO SAY -NO- when someone tells you that you are now their slave for real, or that you have to webcam with them to get roleplay, or they demand your real life information, even an email address, or any of a myriad of demands they may try to place on you.
If YOU want to give up that control, and allow someone into your life out of game, in whatever fashion that is YOUR choice, but no one can force you into it.
ALWAYS keep in mind, that should anyone demand or pressure you to provide services out of game that you are not comfortable with in exchange for a collar, a kennel, a city position, whatever....you are not obligated in any way to accept their conditions and its highly advised you leave the situation immediately. It is not an accepted practice anywhere in Gor to exchange real life sexual acts for training or favors, no matter what you may be told.
with these rules I want to end the class
. Real Life comes first, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I am available in IM to help in any way I can, should you need a shoulder to lean on. But in no way, shape, or form will your RL be neglected for online playtime. We are all here as serious role players who love Gor, but it should never be put as a priority over anything, job, kids, sleep, eating, etc. The Free are not to demand such from you, even if in the middle of a beating you may go, but do not use it as an excuse to get out of such, lying about having to leave for RL is as serious as not tending to it.. You need not beg to leave, simply hop OOC and tell us you need to go, wish well then go... REAL LIFE COMES FIRST!!!
you have rights
1. You have the right to be respected. No matter what role you play, everyone is equal OOC.
2. You have the right to be an active part of role play, and to lead a scene.
3. You have the right to not be punished IC for something that happens OOC. (Metagaming)
4. You have the right to decline un-Gorean role play.
5. You have the right to "fade to black" in a sex scene. Just because someone wants to use your character doesn't mean you have to cyber.
6. You have the right to take your time in writing out your emote. If people can't be patient you should not be punished IC.
7. You have the right to go afk, to log, to leave the city to shop, or to go out of Gor without obtaining permission first.
8. You have the right to contact a Mod if role play is questionable.
9. You have the right to decline any requests for pictures, voice, cam or real life information.
10. You have the right to voice an opinion about Gor and how Rp should work in an out of character setting.
If there are problems and you can not handle it alone...make a NC, contact the Admin,s, Slaver,s or any Free around to help you....we here in Teehra do NOT accept ANY forms off ooc forcing.
Thank you for your attention
